Prof. Paulina Makinwa-Adebusoye, an
independent consultant, was made a Fellow of the Social Science Academy of
Nigeria in 2001, and an IUSSP Laureate in 1999 for an ‘Outstanding Contribution
to African Demography’. She was President of the Social Science Council of
Nigeria (1986-1987) and President of the Population Association of Nigeria
(1987-1995).
She was awarded the Nigerian
National Order of Merit (NNOM) in 2003 for academic excellence and conferred
with the national honour, Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) in 2008.
Prof. Makinwa-Adebusoye was Director of the Food Security and Sustainable
Development Division of the UN Economic Commission for Africa from 1997 to 2002

director of the Centre for Development and Population Activities (CEDPA) in
Lagos, Nigeria. She has been Chief Technical Advisor (CTA) on Population and
Development and expert on gender to the Department of Population Activities in
the Nigerian Ministry of Health. She was Head of the Population Research Unit
of the Nigerian Institute of social and Economic Research (NISER), and
Professor of Geography at the University of Benin. Makinwa-Adebusoye has been
consultant to UNFPA, UNICEF, the World Bank, WHO and IOM. .
She is a member of the International
Scientific Advisory Board of the Wittgenstein Centre for Demography and Global
Human Capital, Vienna, Austria and a member of the Editorial Advisory Committee
for International Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health, New York,
USA.
